Photography UNIT 57: Assignment 2 - Family Photoshoot

This blog depicts the actual photos that I took during my photo shoot. The photo shoot was created in order to document the faces and personalities that run in my family, so that people know that when they look at these photo's that although we all look similar, we all have huge personalities and different ones as seen by the photo's here.

As well as an close up of each of the individuals face, Each member of my family got a close up of their lips nad a close of their eyes, again in pose they wish. Just again, to show personality and what story you can get out of each of the thee photos of their personalities as well as to show the similarities that lie within our family itself). With each family member,

posed the same question "What face describes you" These seen here are the results of that question. when doing the close ups of the individual facial features.

To really make it clear that the theme is family of this photo shoot, each member stands in front of a collage of family photos that each of them were in (seen above) . So the idea of family surrounds them yet, they all have different personalities shining through. For each member of the family, during their photo shoot, i changed the aperture settings and the shutter seeded as it is apparent in each photos, we will discuss how these settings have manipulated each of the photos and made them stand out differently. The use of focal Zoom, is also apparent in each photo, which we will continue to discuss.

it should be noted that each photo is titled with the full name of the family member (including the dog) and theri nickname of teyh family member.

Photography UNIT 57: Assignment 2 - Overall Plan

This blog post discusses the actual structure and plan of the Photo-shoot. Just to clarify, The photo-shoot is going to be a documentation of the faces of my family and how they would react to things that I would say to them. Then I would catch their face in the moment that I would say that phrase.

In the photo-shoot, I will give the models the freedom to make any facial expression that they choose and I will take a picture of it

Message

What I really want to communicate through this photo-shoot, is that no two people are the same, no matter if they are from the same family. Everyone has a unique personality and will react to the same thing in different ways.

Fact is, in my own life, I have constantly been told that I take after other people and that I'm following in the footsteps of my parents or  siblings or grandparents. Whereas, I never have my own choices taken into account by others and people assumed I'm going to end up looking or doing the same thing as my relatives.

I want to prove this wrong! Show that everyone has different personalities (despite being In the same family tree)  and might react to the same thing in different ways. This photo-shoot gives people the freedom to do that and react on their own accord rather than follow what somebody else may have done.

Planned Structure

The Photo-shoot will take place in my house. In the downstairs where we have white wall paper which will make a good background.  I will position the model in front of the wall paper and say top them "Make the Best face that describes you". I will then photograph different aspects of their face and take out individual facial features such as eyes and lips and take separate photo's of those features. I will give them the option to wear whatever they want, wear their hair, glasses or make up however they choose. They can either sit or stand (as long as it's against the background). For each image, I will manually change the aperture and shutter speed so the overall result is different. So I will take overall, one final photo of their face with the expression and two more separate photo's isolating out the eyes and the lips(still in the same expression) each family member will have three photo's.

Pros / Cons

Pros
  • Readily available equipment at my house such as whitewall paper, make up and charger for my camera, objects and other things that can impact the photo-shoot
  • Variety of people that i can use in my photo-shoot
  • Realistic and genuine rather than posed
  • Wide Space to take photo's
  • Fun for both the photographer and the model
  • No bad photo's can be resulted
  • Variety of Facial expressions - no two people will be similar
  • In my own home, so I don't have to get a lease or a license or any governmental permission, as I am on my own private property
  • Do the photo-shoot at my own pace
Cons

  • as it is family members, it is a very relaxed photo-shoot, therefore, they might not take the photo-shoot as seriously and therefore can be difficult to work with, especially hen i ask them to pull a face that might describe them
  • Time constraints
  • Noise, can distract the camera man as my house is hectic
  • Can be considered copyright and unoriginal. because it was inspired by TV Show
  • can clash with plans that the models may have and therefore might be less obliged to take part i.e.  work, babysitting etc...
  • reuse of similar models in past projects

Photography UNIT 57: Assignment 2 - Moodboard

This Mood board demonstrates my brainstorming phase of my assignment, I have chosen to look at both Steve McCurry and Martin Parr's style of photography. in my previous blog post, I took account how both are extremely similar styles of showing human emotion and take photo's at the perfect moment and in the perfect way in order to give the impression of being "caught in the moment" which I would like to achieve during this assignment. Catching people in the moment.

This Mood board is a collage of their photo's that inspire me to come up with my plan which I hope to go through with, by the end of this month.

So as you can see, my idea is to make sure that with this photo-shoot, I catch people at the writer moment in order to maker the picture all the more effective.

So from this brainstorming session, I have worked out the basis for my photo-shoot, would be the a portfolio of the different faces that are in my family. because my own family are extremely similar and very different facial features and reactions. (similar to that that is on Orange of the New Black Theme Song)
This Mood board is made up of the things that inspired me to do the photoshoot documenting people's faces.
  • The main images are pictures from the OITNB theme song, which really had an impact of me and shows the similar style I want to achieve within my own photo-shoot
  • There are pictures from both Steve McCurry and Martin Parr's photographic work, they both inspire me timontaeenusly to do photo's that involve catching people in the moment.
  • Parr suggests, that you take photo's showing humans at their worst in order to symbolise how the working class really behave or what the upper class looks compared to the working class.
  • McCurry shows the side of the world that people are not as ware about and to show the true crisis that re going on now, meaning Steve McCurry has to show people at their best in order to capture the life that goes on in third world countries compared to first world ones.
  •  I would love and hope to follow a mixture of both McCurry and Parr when implementing my Photo - shoot.

Photography UNIT 57: Assignment 2 - Documentary Photographers and Photography.

Documentary Photography is a photo that is taken in order to certificate an event that has occurred in everyday life, historical events and history itself. In the following blog post, we will be looking at three different documentary photographers and the styles that they choose to document their photographs in, so that this helps me produce ides for my own documentary photo shoot.

Martin Parr

Martin Parr is a British Documentary photographer and photojournalist. He is very well known for taking photo's that rep[resent the real nature of human life rather than anything being staged, Parr uses methods in order to show the satirical and intimate aspects of modern life that people lead. He likes ti take photos that represent the inequality between classes as well as the general behavior of the western Europe which are known to be more sustainable and have are wealthier than the east.

He has worked on many projects, particularly in the late 20th Century, such as The Cost of Living (1987 -89) and Small World (1987 - 94). however, the project that caught my eye was the last resort and personally, I believe there is no doubt that this is his most famous and his most infamous piece of Photography.

The Last Resort (1983 - 86) was as series of 40 photo's documenting a normal day at the beach. Shot in New Brighton, it shows and documents how working class families behaved and what they did that showed off their natural characteristics. It demonstrates as well as how people who were in the proletariat acted in the 80's and how it differs to today, the 21st Century. The see photo's are amazing because they capture human life at it's worst possible moments. Here are some examples of the final 40.

When these photo's were being captured Parr used a classic characteristic colour as well as daylight flash, which is said to be in most of his photographs and was inspired by the same style as William Eccleston.
Again, what I love about these series of photo's is that the facial expression,m the choice of clothing and the actions of the humans in these photos...were all completely genuine and that was all up to the people that appear in this photo. Such a young woman in the firsts image staring disapprovingly at Parr, which her hands on her hips and a deep stare, shows how overwhelmed she must have been continuously serving kids that ere pushing in front of each other.

Another photo represents the greed that the humans have for food and how the are in working class and can afford it, we can see a bundle of kids squashing it get to the front and pump condiments onto their food, like the previous shot, a sense of anxiety and disruption is clear and apparent.

In conclusion when i do my photo-shoot, I aspire to use the methods that Martin Parr used in order to get genuine hum,an reaction rather than someone staging a reaction for the camera. This project has inspired me to document human life and well being of others, so that when I am doing the photos I can capture one of the many real faces of human expression and realism of the human experience.

Steve McCurry

Steve McCurry is a American documentary photographer and photojournalist, he is one of the most famous contemporary photographers in the world. He is most well known for capturing the human experience of human emotion such struggle and joy. He is especially known for his expressive use of colour, which give the photo a more rich and vibrant effect.. Although he is American, he works mainly in South East Asia and India, Since the early 70's he has earned the reputation of knowingly taking photo's of civilians and those on the front line, during disputes and conflicts, in order to get everyone's different perspective on the matter.
By looking at his most recent photo's we can understand that the style he takes them in has not changed at all over the decades. How McCurry only likes to capture the daily life of those in third world countries and the emotion that they feel. Other photo's also can show how although the country isn't well known or is lacking a stable economy, children (such as the one below) are the exact seem and walk and talk the same way like any child would do in a rich and wealthy country.

2004. Shaolin Monastery.

Boy in Mid-flight, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, 2007.” Photo ©
When taking these photo's you can see that these images were taken in Natural daylight. Steve McCurry is also really well known for using Kodachrome film, which is actually discontinued, so it is a bit hard to come by in the 21st Centaury, therefore although I will be taking the same sort of photo's. It won't have such as evocative colour.

When comparing the styles of both McCurry and Parr, they clash with each other, although both photographers capture a the natural, human experience and want to vocalise issues with society in the 20th and 21st Century Parr chooses to capture at it's worst possible aspects in the name of satire, whereas McCurry poises photos at the best possible angle, in order to enlighten troubles in the world in a serious manner.

Overall, like to aspire to take similar photo's as the ones above, that show people caught in the moment of an event rather than photographing an inanimate object that is already existing qand wha I would love to  achieve in this assignment is documenting emotion on  models faces during a certain event, I would love to achieve similar goals as the photo's taken above by both Parr and McCurry and capture people being caught in the moment whether it be happy or sad.

Magazine UNIT 51: Final Double Page Spread

Task 3: Be able to design and produce page layout to meet a brief

As you can see, this is my final result that i am submitting for my double page spread, based on the fictitious story of Krystal Snow and Lola Summers - the celebrity best friends who are releasing an album together about their friendship.
This Layout of this article was originally based off of another double page spread about the Pop Star, Nicki Minaj, (Seen Below) and that the original plan was going t have the main picture in the middle of the page and the text surrounding it, however due to an issue with the margin of the page  moved the main image to the end as well as the supporting images in the article. However you can see that the headline and the stand first are both based in similar areas of MY article compared to the one below.
As well as the fact that the theme of the page rotates around the clothes the model is wearing in the main image. The theme colours of my article are blue, red, white and black.

Photography UNIT 57: Assignment 1 - Task 2

The following contact sheets represent the three aspects of photography that i have chosen to study which is Adverting, Fashion and Portrait, when viewing these contact sheets the purple outline is of Photo's that i believe stood out and what I would consider using in any context. In all the photo's posted on here, the model is my 15 year old sister, Michal.

ADVERTISING PHOTOGRAPHY

The following contact sheet is of adverting photography and just so it is clear that the product that is being advertised is a pair of Red Sony headphones. The photo;s were taken in context that the photos going to be in black and white except the headphones which stand out as being red.

  •  The first photo that i will be summarizing is the one of the model smiling while taking of the headphones. The reason why this is one of my chosen photo's is because although it is hard to see the actual product and the rand name on it, it shows that while wearing the product the person is still happy which is what i wanted to show the feeling when wearing the earphones

  •  The next picture that i want t analyze is the one to the right of the one above, This photo is one of my chosen photo's because of the product placement despite the fact that the facial expression on the model is difficult to see because she is covering her face, the headphone that she is wearing. If the photo was in  black and white and i had highlighted the headphones natural color than this would be probably a good adverting image

  • The next picture that i would like to analyze is the one below the picture that just analysed is because it is a really good of the model looking genuinely happy whereas it also shows the product. The angle really brings out lighting i n this photo as it brings out the natural parts of the models face as well as blurring out the background it also shows a different angle of the models face rather than completely upfront. In general it s a nice picture

  • The penultimate photo that we will be summarizing of this contact sheet is probably my favorite, The photo of the model burying his face in his hands. Because the aim that i was trying to get across to the model is seeing the advert in a more depressing light. The aim was to show this girl curled up in a ball in  black and white and once again highlighting the red headphones to show a story behind the girl who is listening to them.

  •  The last photo i want to go over is diagonal to the top left of the photo that I described above, this is another one of my favorites due to the fact that I like how it is caught in the moment of general happiness i wanted to capture when the photo was being taken because the model is looking like she is having fun and dancing which I wanted her to do. The picture was taken in a natural environment with the background blurred out so you can see the expression o her face. The picture would not be printed in black and white.

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY

The fashion photography that is being displayed here is adverting the summer look of a short crop top and ripped jeans. The whole idea of sunshine and the actual summer season such as flowers and green grass was intentionally meant to stand out in the photo. All these photo's were taekn outside using natural lighting.

  • The first photo that I will be looking at is the second one to the left in the top row of a mid shot of the model sitting on the grass with natural light shining down on her, the reason why this is one of my chosen photo's is because of the natural environment in which it was taken and the fact that her natural l highlights were brought out in her hair as well as the stunning green background of leaves brings out the screen in both her eyes and her shirt.

  • The next photo that i will be analyzing is on the right to the one described above, it is a picture of the model in the full outfit looking gingerly at the flower,  photo is good as it brings out the slight green tinge in the outfit with the background however it is also really beautiful seeing a single pink flower in a field of green and it being pink matches the top that she is wearing as well as the fact that is not intentionally posing making it all the more beautiful and the outfit all the more casual. This is probably my favorite photo out of the 20 i took.

  • The photo below that one is a great photo because the lightness of the full outfit contradicts with the dark surrounding of the tree's and leaves which is what fashion photography does by  trying to promote great fashion. The focal point is clear of the shorts and shirt. What is really good about this photo as well as how naturally the environment goes from light to dark - starting from outwards of the photo such as the build up around the model is leaning towards her and the focal point around her.

  • The photo at the bottom , second from the right is very similar to the one above as the model is posing differently however the same idea of the darkness surrounding the photo is there in order to bring out the brightness of the outfit, in this photo the model looks like she is walking and unintentionally the natural light has fallen on the grass in front of her so it looks like the model is casually walking towards the light. The reason why the model is facing backwards is to really promote the fact that this outfit can be worn by anyone and by not showing her face, i' m advertising that anybody can walk and wear this outfit pr alternatively that by wearing a summer like attire and showing the model walking to wards the light it can be symbolizing that "summer is coming"

  • The last photo that i am going to be analyzing is left to the one which we just summarized, which is as i said just meant to bring out the lightness of the outfit among the dark leaves the main aim of this specific image is to show off the figure of the model and to show the outfit as a side view. What's also great about this photo is that the way that she is positioned splits the style of the leaves between each other providing a very effective background top accompany the photo.

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

The final set of photographs that we will be looking at is of portrait photography, not all these photo's were taken in natural light but the fives that i have singled out have. And it should be noted that the photo that has grey highlighted around it is not of the chosen five but an anomaly in the screenshot

  • The first photo that i have taken is probably my favorite out of the bunch, it s the extreme close up of the models face in natural lighting. The reason why this is my favorite is because the hazel in her irises are crystal clear and you can look at every detail of her face such as freckles eyebrows and even the smudge of mascara under her eyelid. Because it was sunny at the time of the photograph being taken her face is covered by a natural light and her freckles are more stunning than usual.

  •  The next photo that i will be analyzing is the one in the next row down in the far left, this is also equally my favorite with the one above, mainly because of the green background that subtle brings out the olive colour in her eyes and it makes her skin also look incredibly clear as it provides a subtle yet enhancing green tinge to it. in my opinion, when I take any portrait photo, i believe in natural beauty and no editing, in this photo i believe that my standards were met.

  • The photo directly underneath is a good photo because of the background and the lighting bl;end together nicely as there is a dark background brings out the brightness in the models face and gives her a nice glow as well as some pink that is seen in the shirt she is wearing brightens up the colour of her lips and is almost matching with each other.

  • the photo to the right of the one we described above, Is a nice natural photo of using an inanimate object to give life to the photo such as a tree and the darkness of the tree and the leaves behind let some light through and bring out the natural glow in the models face,Her brown darker hair also blends well with the lightness of the darkness of the tree.

  • The last photo that we will be analyzing is another natural and light photo but this time it is against a fence and although there is a nail sticking out, it once again shows the sign of nature and blends in nicely with the photo. The model also isn't looking directly in the photo giving a cwetain vibe of the model being caught in the moment while the image was being captured
